Skin care is a broad term for keeping your skin in its best condition. As we age, our skin begins to lose elasticity and become less able to keep moisture in without looking dry and flaky. Our bodies start producing more oil to lubricate our joints, while our skin produces more sebum to waterproof it and prevent water loss. When we don't cleanse our face often enough, our pores get clogged up with dead skin cells and bacteria. These build up over time, causing acne, blackheads, whiteheads, and oily or congested skin. Luckily, there are many ways to improve your skin's appearance and feel.

To help your skin look fresh and young, use a cleanser that is gentle enough not to strip away any natural oils or cause blemishes. Avoid using harsh products that contain abrasive ingredients, like baking soda. Instead, opt for products made with mild ingredients like glycerin and aloe vera. In particular, look for moisturizing formulas that combine both humectants and occlusives to lock in moisture and prevent further drying. Moisturize your skin twice daily to keep your face hydrated and prevent breakouts. A great way to achieve this is to apply a generous amount of serum after cleansing.

You also need to take good care of your skin during the winter months. Cold weather is hard on your skin, causing it to crack and peel. Use a mask once a week to exfoliate and moisturize your skin. The best masks for winter are ones that are clay-based and enriched with vitamin C. Clay masks allow deep penetration of the product, helping to soften rough patches and reduce pores while adding volume and texture. Vitamin C helps stimulate collagen production and rejuvenates skin tissue. Look for a formula that contains at least 10% vitamin C. And if you're concerned about your complexion getting dark under the eyes, consider starting your morning off with a few drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil works to remove excess oils and dirt while also reducing redness under the eyes.

Finally, always wear sunscreen. If you live in a sunny climate, make sure you protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Wearing sunscreen every day is recommended for people who spend a lot of time outside in the sun. However, you should avoid SPF 50+ sunscreens. Many of these have chemicals that increase the risk of developing cancer. SPF 15 is fine for those who only go out occasionally, in moderate sunlight. Make sure you choose a sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Titanium is known for being effective at absorbing UVA rays and preventing wrinkles. Zinc oxide is highly reflective and can help reflect infrared radiation.

Don’t get waxed

Waxing removes your hair while leaving behind a layer of paraffin oil. Paraffin oil traps moisture and keeps your skin dry, especially if you have oily skin. But what happens when you go swimming? Your hair will begin to stick together because of the trapped water. That's exactly what you want to happen--your hair shouldn't trap water inside, only leave it on the surface. Waxing prevents this. So if you're planning a pool party, skip the wax.

Wash your face

The best thing you can do for your skin is to cleanse it regularly. Washing your face twice a day helps remove excess impurities and dirt while exfoliating once a week gives your skin a nice fresh start. Using soap or an anti-bacterial cleanser will get rid of bacteria and prevent breakouts. Make sure to use lukewarm water for washing your face, never hot water. Hot water causes your skin to expand, which makes it look dull. Instead, use warm or cold water and allow it to run down your neck and arms.
